Title of Workshop:
Success Focused Leadership

Workshop Description:
Do you find yourself typically “running out of time” while your subordinates are typically “running out of work?” Do you ask the question, “Why do I have so much work” and if you really step back and think about it, you realize that it’s not really yours? Are you the type of Manager who feels that it’s your job to solve people’s problems? Do you find yourself taking on so much of the staff/team/unit responsibilities that you become the subordinate and they the boss? There is a way out! Encouraging staff to take more initiative does not make you appear less strong, more vulnerable and less useful. When you encourage staff to handle their own situations/issues/next steps (their monkeys), they acquire new skills - and you liberate time to do your own job.

This workshop exposes those “Monkeys” and gives you information and insight on how to “Get and keep them off your back!” Regain and grow your “Discretionary” time. This allows you more time to focus on leading your team/unit/area of responsibility.

Changing Culture, Changing Lives: Employee Learning Teams
Workshop Description:
In 2018, CSOSA staff committed to focusing on the evidence based practice of skill-building with directed practice. In an effort to take learning beyond the classroom the Office of Community Supervision and Intervention Services (OCSIS), and the Re-Entry and Sanctions Center (RSC) implemented Learning Teams. Learning Teams are a diverse mix of OCSIS and RSC employees. Teams are composed of staff at varying leadership levels, employees from across disciplines, and from all different field sites. Learning Teams promote an environment conducive to change by reinforcing the WHY and building understanding to reduce stress and anxiety about the unknown. Learning Teams provide continuous peer coaching and support to staff. Learning Teams also serve as a platform for all staff to be involved in organized discussions regarding agency issues and allow staff a voice in decision-making. Finally, and most importantly, Learning Teams foster an environment that promotes community, collaboration, and personal and professional growth

This workshop will discuss the evolving role of the Learning Team, program implementation, and the vision for the future of Learning Teams and EBP support in CSOSA. This workshop will also include a Learning Team simulation.

Title of Workshop:
Applying Inside Out

Workshop Description:
SMART Recovery’s 4-Point Program teaches skills that address addictive, self-defeating behavior, and each point of this plan is discussed in meetings. Addictive behavior is more than drinking and using other drugs, it includes criminal thinking, gambling, conning, manipulation, and other maladaptive behaviors. All of these have to do with how one is thinking – or not thinking – that is, about long-term well-being. SMART Recovery’s InsideOut Program can provide a means of re-framing the thought process whereas changes are wrought based upon the evidence of one’s own rational belief system. The presenter will demonstrate how this is done by highlighting an array of supportive information, InsideOut tools and strategies that empower participants with the power of choice.

We are interested in a display table if one is available for follow-up information. My publicist Bill Greer is also being copied on this communique.

Successful Onboarding with a Probation Orientation Program (P.O.P)

Workshop Description:
Probation Orientation Project Overview:
The Probation Orientation Program (P.O.P.) is an on-boarding system for recently sentenced probationers which implements key Evidence-Based Practices of Motivational Interviewing and action planning. EBP is combined with Adult Learning Theory.(utilizing participant’s knowledge and life experiences, various instructional techniques and emphasizes "what is in it for me"). EBP and Adult Learning Theory are melded with solid human resources practice of “The 4 C’s” which promotes “compliance, clarification, culture, connection” as powerful onboarding strategies for success.

P.O.P. intends to provide the Allegheny County Probation department the following opportunities:
- to impact multiple probationers in one setting
- to impact probationers consistently with EBP
- to impact probationers with culture, connection, expectation extremely early in probation term
- to maximize impact with minimal allocated resources

P.O.P. is unique due to the utilization of the four foundational principles of motivational interviewing (engaging, focusing, evoking and planning) in a group setting. The four principles are instrumental in the class curriculum:
- We engage the group as adult learners
- We focus the group on expectations and outcomes
- We evoke personal goals and how their goals can align with successful probation outcomes
- We instruct and model effective action planning

How DC DOC is Becoming an Evidence-Based Organization

Workshop Description:
The District of Columbia Department of Corrections (DC DOC) is using evidence-based and innovative practices to help incarcerated individuals pursue activities that will enhance their own lives as well as the lives of their loved ones as they return to their communities. Unfortunately, recidivism research indicates that individuals that have been incarcerated are more likely to commit additional crimes without targeted reentry programming and comprehensive discharge planning. Because DC DOC leadership and practitioners have some insight on factors that are associated with people engaging in criminal activity to begin with, the agency is realigning itself to break the mold within the jail/prison sector giving those housed in its institution the dignity, encouragement, and tools required for successful community reintegration. The agency provides rehabilitative programming and services, with additional connections to services after release, to increase residents’ chances of sustainable success. At DC DOC, we believe in supporting not only a resident’s basic needs, but also the sometimes very complex needs the individual may have as a District resident. The Department is proud to share some of our cutting edge and proactive multi-faceted approaches and strategies in shifting the paradigm from punitive to rehabilitative corrections.
